Pe\u00e7es d'escacs d'Afrasiyab<\/strong><\/p>

Les peces d'ivori dels segles VII i VIII trobades al jaciment d'Afrasiyab a Samarcanda representen el joc d'escacs m\u00e9s antic conegut. Aquestes detallades figurines ofereixen una visi\u00f3 figurativa de les arrels centreasi\u00e0tiques del joc, en qu\u00e8 l'alfilera apareix com un carro amb diversos cavalls, el cavaller es representa com un genet amb un escut, i un alfil muntat sobre un elefant juntament amb diverses peces de pe\u00f3. El conjunt recull la jerarquia militar de l'\u00e8poca de la Ruta de la Seda abans del gir cap als dissenys abstractes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Els peons de Lewis, trobats a l'illa de Lewis d'Esc\u00f2cia i tallats en ivori de morsa, s\u00f3n figures del segle XII que marquen la transici\u00f3 espectacular dels escacs de les formes abstractes a la narraci\u00f3 v\u00edvida. Modelades per l'artesania n\u00f2rdica, aquestes peces, amb els seus reis angoixats, les seves reines contemplatives i els seus berserkers que mosseguen l'escut, reflecteixen la jerarquia social i la psique de l'Europa medieval.
