Este fragmento de m\u00e1rmol de la \u00e9poca bizantina, descubierto durante unas excavaciones en Yenikap\u0131, Estambul, demuestra que el juego formaba parte inseparable de la vibrante vida social de los antiguos puertos. Su forma totalmente secular, abstracta y geom\u00e9trica, exenta de iconograf\u00eda religiosa, lo convirti\u00f3 durante siglos en una plataforma universal en la que se reun\u00edan personas de distintas creencias a trav\u00e9s de reglas compartidas. El ep\u00edteto \u201cAr-Rumi\u201d simboliza el periplo del ajedrez por la cuenca mediterr\u00e1nea, norteafricana y de Oriente Pr\u00f3ximo, destacando sus v\u00ednculos hist\u00f3ricos con el mundo bizantino. En esta obra fundamental, Al-Adli no s\u00f3lo clasific\u00f3 las configuraciones de aperturas (tabiyas) y los problemas de finales (mansubas), sino que tambi\u00e9n sent\u00f3 las bases de la teor\u00eda moderna del ajedrez a trav\u00e9s del intelecto colectivo de esta vasta regi\u00f3n.
