Transformacija savjetni\u010dke (kralji\u010dine) figure na \u0161ahovnici iz ograni\u010dene figure u najmo\u0107niju silu na plo\u010di ve\u0107 je procvjetala kao alegorija ljubavi u pjesmama poput Scachs d'amor iz 1475. godine, mnogo prije Lucene. Vjerojatno crpe\u0107i iz (i kopiraju\u0107i) izgubljenih tekstova Francescha Vicenta iz 1495., Lucena je iskoristio mo\u0107 tiska kako bi univerzalizirao ta pravila \u201cnove igre\u201d koja su se ve\u0107 odra\u017eavala u ulicama i poeziji. Po narud\u017ebi kralja Alfonsa X. Kastiljskog, ovaj rukopis najve\u0107i je zapis tisu\u0107ljetnog putovanja \u0161aha iz Perzije preko mediteranskog, sjevernoafri\u010dkog i bliskoisto\u010dnog bazena do Europe. Knjiga predstavlja \u0161ah ne samo kao razonodu, ve\u0107 kao simulaciju svemira, isprepletenu astrologijom i matematikom. Njezine vi\u0161e od 150 minijatura ovjekovje\u010duju civilizirani dijalog ljudi razli\u010ditih vjera, \u017eena i u\u010denjaka koji se okupljaju za istim stolom, koriste\u0107i sekularne i apstraktne figure.
