La sua forma interamente laica, astratta e geometrica, priva di iconografia religiosa, lo ha reso per secoli una piattaforma universale dove persone di fedi diverse si incontravano attraverso regole condivise. L'appellativo \u201cAr-Rumi\u201d simboleggia il viaggio a pi\u00f9 livelli degli scacchi attraverso il bacino del Mediterraneo, del Nord Africa e del Medio Oriente, evidenziando i suoi legami storici con il mondo bizantino. In quest'opera fondamentale, Al-Adli non si \u00e8 limitato a classificare i setup di apertura (tabiyas) e i problemi di endgame (mansubas), ma ha anche gettato le basi della moderna teoria degli scacchi attraverso l'intelletto collettivo di questa vasta regione.
