Het is met name gedocumenteerd in Kitab ash-Shatranj, 's werelds eerste systematische verhandeling over schaakstrategie. Het is misschien meer dan toeval dat een van de auteurs van Kitab ash-Shatranj Al-Adli Ar-Rumi was, bekend als de eerste wereldkampioen schaken. Rumi staat voor het Romeinse Rijk en komt uit Romeinse landen.
