Deze gedetailleerde beeldjes geven een figuratieve kijk op de Centraal-Aziatische wortels van het spel, met de toren als een wagen met meerdere paarden, het ridderstuk is afgebeeld als een cavalerist met een schild, en een Alfil op een olifant samen met verschillende pionstukken. Gevormd door Noors vakmanschap weerspiegelen deze stukken met hun angstige koningen, contemplatieve koninginnen en schildbijtende berserkers de sociale hi\u00ebrarchie en psyche van middeleeuws Europa.
