Deze sets belichamen het tijdperk waarin schaken migreerde van koninklijke hoven naar het intellectuele hart van Europa, op de tafels van filosofen, wetenschappers en revolutionairen. Gedurende de 18e eeuw en een groot deel van de 19e eeuw diende dit ontwerp als de universele taal van het spel, getuige van de strategische zetten van geesten die de loop van de geschiedenis veranderden, zoals Napoleon Bonaparte, Benjamin Franklin en Voltaire.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tijdens dit tijdperk, toen de grote meester Fran\u00e7ois-Andr\u00e9 Danican Philidor het spel voorzag van een moderne theoretische basis door te verklaren dat <\/span><b>\u201cPionnen zijn de ziel van het schaken\u201d<\/b> De slanke, gelaagde en architectonische lijnen van de R\u00e9gence-stukken werden de visuele handtekening van deze intellectuele revolutie.
