As pe\u00e7as de marfim dos s\u00e9culos VII e VIII encontradas no s\u00edtio de Afrasiyab, em Samarcanda, representam o mais antigo jogo de xadrez conhecido. Essas figuras detalhadas oferecem uma vis\u00e3o figurativa das ra\u00edzes do jogo na \u00c1sia Central, apresentando a Torre como uma carruagem com v\u00e1rios cavalos, a pe\u00e7a do cavalo como um cavaleiro com um escudo e um Alfil montado em um elefante, juntamente com v\u00e1rias pe\u00e7as de pe\u00e3o.
