Esse fragmento de m\u00e1rmore da era bizantina, descoberto durante escava\u00e7\u00f5es em Yenikap\u0131, Istambul, prova que o jogo era uma parte insepar\u00e1vel da vibrante vida social dos portos antigos. Sua forma totalmente secular, abstrata e geom\u00e9trica, livre de iconografia religiosa, fez dele uma plataforma universal onde pessoas de diferentes religi\u00f5es se encontraram por meio de regras compartilhadas durante s\u00e9culos. O ep\u00edteto \u201cAr-Rumi\u201d simboliza a jornada multifacetada do xadrez pela bacia do Mediterr\u00e2neo, do norte da \u00c1frica e do Oriente M\u00e9dio, destacando suas liga\u00e7\u00f5es hist\u00f3ricas com o mundo bizantino. Nessa obra seminal, Al-Adli n\u00e3o apenas classificou as configura\u00e7\u00f5es de abertura (tabiyas) e os problemas de final de jogo (mansubas), mas tamb\u00e9m lan\u00e7ou as bases da teoria moderna do xadrez por meio do intelecto coletivo dessa vasta regi\u00e3o.
