Otec autora, Juan Ram\u00edrez de Lucena, bol v\u00fdznamn\u00fd diplomat a \u201cconverso\u201d (osoba \u017eidovsk\u00e9ho p\u00f4vodu) v slu\u017eb\u00e1ch katol\u00edckych monarchov. Toto multikult\u00farne rodinn\u00e9 z\u00e1zemie sl\u00fa\u017eilo ako d\u00f4le\u017eit\u00fd intelektu\u00e1lny kan\u00e1l, ktor\u00fd u\u013eah\u010doval tok poznatkov zo Stredomoria, severnej Afriky a Bl\u00edzkeho v\u00fdchodu do Eur\u00f3py.<\/p><p>Lucena v tomto diele nevystupuje ako vyn\u00e1lezca, ale ako majstrovsk\u00fd kompil\u00e1tor a kodifik\u00e1tor. Premena \u0161achovej fig\u00farky poradkyne (kr\u00e1\u013eovnej) z obmedzenej fig\u00farky na najmocnej\u0161iu silu na \u0161achovnici rozkvitla ako aleg\u00f3ria l\u00e1sky v b\u00e1s\u0148ach ako Scachs d'amor z roku 1475 u\u017e d\u00e1vno pred Lucenou. Kniha predstavuje \u0161ach nielen ako z\u00e1bavu, ale aj ako simul\u00e1ciu vesm\u00edru, prepojen\u00fa s astrol\u00f3giou a matematikou. Jej viac ako 150 miniat\u00far zve\u010d\u0148uje civilizovan\u00fd dial\u00f3g \u013eud\u00ed r\u00f4znych vierovyznan\u00ed, \u017eien a u\u010dencov, ktor\u00ed sa stret\u00e1vaj\u00fa za jedn\u00fdm stolom a pou\u017e\u00edvaj\u00fa svetsk\u00e9 a abstraktn\u00e9 fig\u00farky.
